SCREENING AND CRUSHING BUCKETS MAKE THE IDEAL SOLUTION ON RICHARD III CONSERVATION SITE
Danaher & Walsh have been working on reconstructing an existing car park, which formed part of the old Greyfriars Friary in central Leicester. This is a historical interest site, now a scheduled ancient monument, as it is next to the burial site of Richard III which was discovered back in 2012. The site they are working on is next to the Richard III museum. The job involved reconstructing the car park for the diocese of Leicester as part of their expansion plans for Leicester Cathedral.
Danaher & Walsh is a long-established, Leicester-based civil engineering contractor operating in the Midlands and East of England. With a strong track record in complex projects and exceptional local knowledge, they were awarded this contract by the Diocese of Leicester following a negotiated procedure.
Due to the location being in a conservation area, work had to be carefully planned. The streets around the site were extremely narrow and the only access for large vehicles was from Peacock Lane (past the Cathedral) and into New Street. Therefore they needed to minimise the number of HGV movements in and around the site.
The key to this was to try and recycle as many materials on site as they could. The company decided to make contact with Andrew Purse, Business Development Manager for Worsley Plant who they knew were the people to help. Andrew visited Matt Walsh, Site Agent for the company to carry out a site evaluation.
He recommended the MB BF60 Crushing Bucket and the REMU EP3150 Screening Bucket, which the company hired for two weeks. Danaher & Walsh operate one of the largest Caterpillar fleets in the Midlands. The buckets were fitted to two of their own 313F excavators.
Working together they would be the ideal solution for Danaher & Walsh to recycle 100% of materials on site. First they could screen out the soil and dirt from the hardcore and then crush the hardcore to reuse. The perfect solution – totally eliminating the need to bring wagons on and off site.
Matt comments: “Every 20 tonne recycled on site resulted in a reduction of two 20 tonne wagons off the narrow streets of the Greyfriars conservation area. This would have been 20 tonne waste hardcore out and 20 tonne MOT coming in.
The risk was not only the environmental issue, it was also a safety one. The area is actually the biggest tourist attraction in the city of Leicester and is absolutely full of tourists with cameras not looking where they are going!”
Matt concludes: “Now we’ve seen the benefits of screening and crushing on site we will definitely be considering it on future projects. It was the perfect solution this time and the service and support from Worsley Plant exceeded our expectations.”
